During the 38th edition of the International Energy Workshop (IEW) on 3 June 2019 in Paris, France, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held a side event to discuss recent debates around the concept of “grid integration costs”.
The focus of this online workshop was on countries who have pledged very high (above 70-80% to 100%) renewable power targets by mid-century, and that accepted to participate in the experience-sharing programme on innovative solutions.
Organised within the framework of IRENA’s Regional Initiative in South East Europe and co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, this workshop aimed to improve understanding of renewable energy socio-economic impacts and the affordability of renewables.
A third of global energy is consumed in the manufacturing sector to convert raw materials like oil, iron or, trees or crops into products like plastics, metals, paper and food.
At this interactive high-level event Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of IRENA and member of the Commission discussed the key findings of the report, highlighting both the opportunities and threats presented by renewables-based energy system.
IRENA participated in a number of key areas, including facilitating the NDC dialogue, and participating in the Ghana-NDC Investment Forum, Marrakech Partnership and thematic blocks on finance, cities and local action, and energy transition.
Taking place during the 2019 Scenarios Forum, the session titled “Renewable-based Electrification: How can we Improve Scenarios for Clean Energy Transition?” addressed how long-term energy scenarios can better account for the potentially transformational changes related to renewables-based electrification.
IRENA’s new edition of Renewable Energy and Jobs – Annual Review, the seventh report in the series, analyses the status of renewable energy employment in 2019 around the world. The report continues to refine and improve data and underlying methodologies compared to previous editions.
IRENA has teamed up with UNDP under the Climate Promise initiative that aims to support 100+ countries in enhancing their NDCs, with focus on the energy component of the commitments, in which more ambitious renewable energy targets can be effectively integrated, while also improving their quality.
