IRENA’s Electricity Storage Roadmap: Concluding Workshop

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held its fourth “International Energy Storage Policy and Regulation” workshop alongside Energy Storage Europe, in Dusseldorf.  The aim of the workshop was to provide a final opportunity for IRENA member countries and other stakeholders to provide their input, feedback and comments on the electricity storage roadmap that has emerged from the series of discussions. This roadmap is part of IRENA’s global roadmap, REmap 2030, which indicates ways countries and regions could transform their energy sectors soon enough to avert catastrophic climate change. The share of renewables in the global energy mix could be doubled cost effectively, in less than two decades, using technologies already existing today, according to IRENA’s REmap analysis.

About 40 participants attended, including 16 representatives for IRENA Member governments, as well as energy storage associations, research institutes, academia and industry.

Ahead of the meeting, IRENA shared its blueprint that identified four priority areas for energy storage to support renewables deployment, and a number of action items within each of these priority areas. Participants were asked to prepare interventions to discuss their feedback on any of the action items.

The workshop was opened by Ruud Kempener, IRENA’s technology roadmap analyst, who presented an overview of the different priority areas and action items identified (presentation).

The results and conclusions of the workshop can be found in the workshop proceedings.

At the end of the conference, three simple questions were posed to some of our delegates, regarding the role of energy storage in the deployment of renewable energy and what lessons learned they will take from the workshop. Watch their video interviews:
