IRENA side event at the 38th International Energy Workshop: Reaching a consensus on “grid integration costs”?

During the 38th edition of the International Energy Workshop (IEW) on 3 June 2019 in Paris, France, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held a side event to discuss recent debates around the concept of “grid integration costs”.

The event gathered over 75 international energy modelling experts to explore a number of questions related to the definition, measurement, and strengths/weaknesses of grid integration costs. Key areas of discussion were: the areas of consensus that have been reached around grid integration costs; the main conceptual disagreements that remain; the actual relevance of the grid integration cost concept; and how the concept of grid integration costs can best support decisions of policymakers and investors.

The IRENA side event at IEW was chaired by Dr. David Daniels of the US Energy Information Administration, and featured six invited interventions from Dr. Asami Miketa (IRENA), Dr. Falko Ueckerdt (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research), Dr. Geoffrey Blanford (Electric Power Research Institute), Dr. Trieu Mai (National Renewable Energy Laboratory), Mr. Brent Wanner (International Energy Agency), and Dr. Claire Nicolas (World Bank).

Invited interventions were followed by an open discussion with participating experts, during which additional opinions on the subject were shared by expert practitioners.
