With a view to supporting the efforts of the countries of Latin America in undertaking the transformation of their energy sector, IRENA and the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica co-organised a regional workshop to exchange lessons learned and best practices in the development and implementation of decarbonisation strategies driven by renewable energy, energy efficiency and electrification.

Organised within the frameworks of IRENA’s Regional Initiative in South East Europe and co-hosted by the Energy Community Secretariat, the workshop enhanced local capacities at the technical, regulatory and operational level for the integration of variable renewable energy to the power systems.

This workshop brought together policy makers and leading energy system modelers from China and abroad to share their experience in using models and scenario analysis to address some of the key questions in the electric power sector.

The Central Asia Regional Workshop on Policy Support Mechanisms was organized by IRENA as a capacity building activity for sharing experiences in setting more market-based renewable energy support schemes.

A conference to raise awareness among policy makers about the opportunities provided by renewable energy and energy efficiency in providing electricity to rural health centres and strengthening health systems in Africa, to exchange knowledge and practical experiences in resource-scarce environments, and to build a coalition in support of global action on this topic.

Following the success of the SIDS Lighthouses Initiative workshop on renewable energy project development and financing in the Indian Ocean Islands in 2018, IRENA co-organised the Regional Forum on Sustainable Energy in the Indian Ocean islands.

Joint International Conference organized by the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Savings of Ukraine and co-hosted by IRENA, took place on 21 February 2019 in Kyiv. The event brought together representatives of the governmental authorities, parliament, international organizations, as well as financial and business sectors, to contribute to the ongoing efforts to create an auctions-based support scheme for renewable energy in Ukraine.

ICAO, the International Civil Aviation Organisation, has a target to cut carbon emissions in half by 2050.   While efficiency improvements like more fuel-efficient aircraft and better air traffic logistics can bring about half of the emissions reductions required, the other half will have to come through renewable jet fuel.  So if we hope to decarbonise the transport sector, we will need to have large amounts of biojet. 

EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) will take place in Brussels and IRENA will be present, widely contributing to the 3-day policy conference. 

During the 38th edition of the International Energy Workshop (IEW) on 3 June 2019 in Paris, France, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held a side event to discuss recent debates around the concept of “grid integration costs”.

This workshop gathered national stakeholders, IFIs, private sector, non-governmental organizations, universities, research institutions that are involved in the renewable energy sector of Lebanon to consolidate the findings drawn from research and the previous consultations on issues that are critical for developing a renewable energy outlook for Lebanon.

The European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) is a month-long series of activities to build a secure energy future for Europe. It brings together public authorities, private companies, NGOs and consumers to promote initiatives to save energy and move towards renewables for clean, secure and efficient power.

The Energy Transitions Working Group established the groundwork for policies on key issues such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, access to affordable energy in Latin America and the Caribbean, the reduction of inefficient subsidies on fossil fuels, making information on energy transparent, and the digitalisation of energy markets.

Tunisia has embarked on an ambitious energy diversification strategy, based on promoting renewable energy development and energy efficiency. IRENA‘s Renewable Readiness Assessment (RRA) is designed to define a detailed list of critical and emerging issues associated with the energy sector and identifies key actions to accelerate renewable energy deployment. 

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in collaboration with the Mongolian Ministry of Energy organised a virtual workshop to discuss and validate the preliminary findings and recommendations of the strategic heating plan for Mongolia.
