Background

Scaling up renewable energy in Central Asia will require the adoption of appropriate policies and measures in both power and end-use sectors, while maximising the socio-economic benefits that can be achieved. In addition, renewable energy policies need to be aligned with measures for energy efficiency.

With a view to support the countries of Central Asia in their energy transition, IRENA is in the process of implementing the regional initiative, which stems from the Astana Communique on Accelerating the Uptake of Renewables in Central Asia. The Communique envisages strengthening enabling frameworks for renewables, including support schemes to facilitate investments.

Objectives

In this context, IRENA organised the Regional Workshop on Policy Support Mechanisms in Central Asia with the objective of providing policy makers and stakeholders in the region with an understanding of policy options that can support the development of renewable energy sector depending on the country context.

During the workshop, participants examined various policy instruments to support renewables in the power sector and discussed the latest global trends in renewable energy auctions. Policy makers exchanged views on policies to support renewables in other end-use sectors, specifically, heating, cooling, and transport, along with measures for energy efficiency.
