From 2 - 6 September, IRENA will take part in two international events in Bangkok: The ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) and the UN's Asia-Pacific Climate Week.
At the 2018 World Government Summit, world leaders and global thinkers came together to identify the highest-priority, near-term solutions to address the growing humanitarian dimension of climate change, as well as its disproportionate impact on women and children. The aim was to agree on a limited number of solutions for collective action and/or internal reforms that can be undertaken within the subsequent 12 months.
The panel focused on the question of what it means to mainstream these pathways across different sectors and businesses.
The Indonesia G20 Presidency in 2022 commissioned IRENA to organise a virtual event to discuss in expanding solar, wind and ocean technology.
The conference gathered experts from various background, political leaders, industry and civil society organisations to address those questions and discuss the future of the EU energy infrastructure.
The event served as a launch of the joint IRENA/UN-OHRLLS report “Scaling Up Renewables in LLDCs”.
In the margins of the UN High-Level Dialogue on Energy, Denmark, IRENA, UNEP and the World Economic Forum hosted the Energy Action Day. The event has convened a broad set of stakeholders to discuss how to accelerate collective action towards net zero and climate-resilient energy systems while promoting decarbonisation to meet the 1.5C threshold.
Second Energy Sub-Technical Working Committee ESTWC meeting was held on the 30th of September in Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby at The Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA). The following objectives were set: to present energy mitigation targets to the members; for members to agree on the energy mitigation actions in the enhanced NDC
This session discussed a set of holistic measures that can inform energy system planning, economic policy making and other policies necessary to maximise the benefits and ensure a just and inclusive energy transition at global, regional and national levels.
The Forum will provide for a High-Level discussion on the relation between science and raising ambition in the light of the ongoing processes and explore actions to accelerate a just, inclusive and systemic energy transition.
Accelerating Corporate Clean Energy Deployment in Emerging Markets at the Global Climate Action Summit 2018 will showcase business leadership in sourcing renewable energy in emerging markets and share lessons learned across the public and private sectors.
IRENA participated in the Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week (LACCW) in Salvador, Brazil. Regional Climate Weeks serve as a critical stepping stone to the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit 2019 and gathers diverse stakeholders in the public and private sectors around a common goal of addressing climate change.
Together with a wide range of partners, IRENA ensured that through a series of high-level events, panel discussions and initiatives, that renewable energy was at the highest level on the global agenda of climate action.
In partnership with the African Union Commission and UK COP26 Presidency, IRENA hosted a webinar on “Advancing the Energy Transition in Africa through Nationally Determined Contributions” as a forum for continental discussions on raising the ambition of the national climate pledges in the lead up to COP26.
The event convened stakeholders from across sectors to discuss challenges and concrete measures needed to scale-up renewables adoption in the agriculture sector, while advancing a joint approach to the energy transition and the transformation of agri-food systems to meet the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.
The 5th edition of the Global Renewable Energy Forum (GREF) focused on net zero-emission pathways of the public and private sectors and on the role of cities in the energy transition.
IRENA participated in the Middle East and North Africa Regional Climate Week taking place in Dubai, UAE (28-31 March 2022).
The event discussed how NDCs are driving energy transformation and inclusive development as well as showcase the existing renewable energy technology and innovation options that African governments have to help implement mitigation and adaptation measures.
IRENA and IDB co-organised this virtual event to provide insights into options, trends and challenges to achieve the Paris Agreement Objectives and limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C and bring CO2 emissions to net zero by 2050. (LAC region)
As one of the custodians of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 on energy, IRENA will prominently participate in the 2022 Sustainable Energy for All Forum.
The event will present the main takeaways of the REmap Central America study and discuss with countries their experience and possible actions to scale renewable electricity generation, electricity grid integration, electrification of transport and modern cooking technologies.
The Round Table discussed a briefing paper on Bioenergy for Sustainable Development which IRENA prepared with the IEA Technology Collaboration Programme on Bioenergy (IEA Bioenergy) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Energy transition is a multi-stakeholder undertaking. Through a broad multi-stakeholder network, close cooperation with the private sector and its global Membership, IRENA was able to leverage collective action and international co-operation at COP23.
The event brought together experts to discuss industrial decarbonisation pathways that need to be followed and highlight the role of systemic innovation to deliver the SDGs and to stay on a decarbonisation pathway consistent with 1.5°C.
