Renewable Energy Roadmap for Central America

IRENA's REmap (Renewable Energy Roadmaps) Central America study has now come to its final phase and the draft of the report is ready. The report provides strategies for the Central America regional energy transition, based on individual country analysis (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama) and scenario analysis for 2030 and 2050. The main conclusion from the report is that the region has great potential to further advance in its energy transition towards 2050, mainly in four areas: renewable electricity generation, electricity grid integration, electrification of transport and modern cooking technologies.

The report serves as an input for government policy makers and energy analysts to update or define their energy strategies and NDC targets, as well as national infrastructure plans that are resilient to climate change, which represent an important part of the post COVID-19 socioeconomic recovery strategies of countries across the board.

The event will present the main takeaways of the REmap Central America study and discuss with countries their experience and possible actions to scale renewable electricity generation, electricity grid integration, electrification of transport and modern cooking technologies. Inputs and outcome will be included in the Renewable Energy Roadmap for Central America – Final Report.
