Global Renewable Energy Forum 2021

The 5th edition of the Global Renewable Energy Forum (GREF) was organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Bonn Office in cooperation with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and REN21 – the Renewable Energy Network for the 21st Century. It was supported by the Korean-German Energy Partnership of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Republic of Korea, and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, Federal Republic of Germany. GREF 2021 took place as a hybrid conference on September 16, 2021.

Limiting temperature increase to 1.5°C by mid-century requires an energy transition based on renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies. More and more countries and companies are committing to net zero-emission strategies. The share of renewable energy continues to increase and a record high was reported in the year of 2020. Yet, to move toward a net zero-emission pathway, annual addition of wind and solar capacity must increase to four-fold by 2030, making the next decade a decisive one.

Against this backdrop, GREF 2021 had focused on net zero-emission pathways of the public and private sectors and on the role of cities in the energy transition. It also highlighted ways to implement ambitious 2030 targets and to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

The partners of the conference were ICLEI, International Geothermal Association (IGA), Eurosolar, UNIDO ITPO Germany, World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), Germanwatch, the EnergyAgency.NRW, and the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW).
