IRENA, in collaboration with Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, is convening a pre‑summit webinar to present the vision, governance and investment‑mobilisation role of the Global Coalition for Energy Planning to finance and planning stakeholders ahead of its formal launch at the Energy Planning Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Through training activities on energy modelling and the process of developing and updating national energy scenarios as direct inputs into national energy master plans, IRENA and its expert partners guide country teams with customised technical support, on-demand advisory services and draft output reviews.
IRENA's LTES Network has brought together experts from around the world to exchange experiences and good practices regarding the development and use of long-term energy scenarios that support the clean energy transition. In the framework of the project “Energy Solutions for Cities of the Future”, IRENA organised a capacity building event on the integration of low-temperature renewable energy sources into district energy systems targeting Southeast Europe.
The workshop on ‘Disruptive innovative solutions enabling 100% renewable power systems by mid-century’, held online, was the fourth and last activity performed under the ‘Experience-sharing programme on innovative solutions for very high shares of renewable power by mid-century’ taking place throughout 2019.
This regional workshop helped develop the capacities in the identification of barriers and opportunities for the deployment of renewable energy projects.
The IRENA FlexTool training in Cuba provided experts of the country with the technical knowledge to use the IRENA FlexTool — a tool for analysing the flexibility of a power system with a high penetration of variable renewable energy, such as solar PV and wind.
GREF 2019 focused on pathways towards carbon-neutrality by 2050, analysing the current status of renewable energy policies and decarbonisation pathways from different perspectives and highlight the role of hydrogen and power-to-x pathways — focusing on improving the understanding of hydrogen ‘as a low-carbon technology option’ and analysing the existing barriers and solutions needed to accelerate its deployment.

The first regional workshop for REmap and FlexTool Central America harmonised awareness of the relevant existing work in the region, exchange the best practices of Central American countries, and shared details of IRENA's REmap and FlexTool analyses.
IRENA participated in the Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week (LACCW) in Salvador, Brazil. Regional Climate Weeks serve as a critical stepping stone to the UN Secretary General’s Climate Summit 2019 and gathers diverse stakeholders in the public and private sectors around a common goal of addressing climate change.

Under the framework of Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA) – IRENA, the International Geothermal Association (IGA) and the World Bank co-organised a series of technical sessions with the Geological Surveys of the Caribbean Islands States, and other local stakeholders in the geothermal sector in the region.
As part of the technical support provided under IRENA’s Clean Energy Corridor of Central America (CECCA) initiative, the Agency held a training, in partnership with GIZ and in collaboration with the Regional Operator Entity (EOR) of Central America, for national power system operators and officials in the region.
