During an Expert Consultation Workshop jointly organised by DRE and IRENA on 25 December 2018 in Thimphu, IRENA experts presented the findings of the background research on renewable energy sector in Bhutan.

Given the growing interest in West Africa, IRENA initiated the preparatory work to expand the Africa Clean Energy Corridor (ACEC) initiative to West Africa. As part of the ECOWAS High Level Policy Investment Forum, IRENA held the first consultative workshop on the West Africa Clean Energy Corridor.

The Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA) Expert Consultation workshop, organised by IRENA in partnership with Botswana's Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security, brought together relevant stakeholders for development of renewable in Botswana, including governmental officials, energy regulators and planners, energy experts, civil society, academia, financing institutions and the private sector.
ESEF 2020 raised awareness about the progress made by ECOWAS member states toward achieving sustainable energy targets set for 2030. It also focused on achieving the vision of the ECOWAS for a prosperous regional sustainable energy market, which is contingent upon harnessing the region’s vast renewable energy potential.

In the context of multi-level governance, many regions, states and cities, faced with local realities, are already deploying cutting-edge technology innovations, setting some of the most ambitious renewable energy targets, and investing in clean tech infrastructure and start-ups, thereby spurring local and regional development and market growth, and accelerating the transition to a low carbon economy.

In Africa, bioenergy is a main source of energy for 70 to 80 percent of population (approximately 800 million people). It has become more challenging for Africans to respond to the global demand towards low-carbon society while adapting themselves to the rapidly changing environment and increasing uncertainty caused by climate change, population growth and land degradation among others.
In partnership with the African Union Commission and UK COP26 Presidency, IRENA hosted a webinar on “Advancing the Energy Transition in Africa through Nationally Determined Contributions” as a forum for continental discussions on raising the ambition of the national climate pledges in the lead up to COP26.
