The SIDS Lighthouses Initiative was launched at the 2014 UN Climate Summit to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS) energy system transformation and facilitate co-ordinated support through partnerships with public, private, intergovernmental, and non-governmental stakeholder organisations. The Initiative, co-ordinated by IRENA, brings together 36 SIDS and 21 development partners, and takes a holistic approach that considers all relevant elements from policy and market frameworks, through technology options to capacity building.

The Regional Initiative on Renewable Energy for Hindu Kush Himalayas is being jointly designed by IRENA and ICIMOD (The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development) to advance the understanding of energy needs in mountain economy and communities for strengthening economic value chains and the opportunities offered by on- and off-grid renewable energy solutions.

IRENA’s Innovation landscape report maps and categorises many examples of innovations and innovative solutions in development by pioneering companies and backed by far-sighted governments around the world. The report and its accompanying detailed online resources provides decision makers with a clear, easily navigable but comprehensive guide to the diversity of innovations in use, or in development, in countries across the globe.

Organised within the framework of IRENA’s Regional Initiative in South East Europe and co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, this workshop aimed to improve understanding of renewable energy socio-economic impacts and the affordability of renewables.

The Round Table discussed a briefing paper on Bioenergy for Sustainable Development which IRENA prepared with the IEA Technology Collaboration Programme on Bioenergy (IEA Bioenergy) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

IRENA in cooperation with OLADE and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), organised a session on Technology Innovation to enhance the use of Renewable Energy.

This webinar aimed to present key findings from the IRENA’s report Transforming small island power systems, share main takeaways from several grid assessment studies, and launch the Agency’s new report on “Quality Infrastructure for Smart Mini-grids”.

This side event held at the Eighth session of the IRENA Assembly, shared the best practices in assuring quality PV systems based on experts’ experience as well as the Agency’s tools and guidelines.
