OLADE III Energy Week – Session on Technology Innovation to enhance the use of Renewable Energy

With the downward trend in costs over the recent years, renewable energy technologies have become the ideal solution for the decarbonisation of the energy sector. Renewable energy, together with energy efficiency, can provide the optimal way to achieve emissions reductions of up to 90% in the energy sector, maintaining the average temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius. Innovative solutions, such as the digitisation and decentralisation of power generation, are contributing to comply with the provisions of the Paris Agreement.

Therefore, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has been actively working in the field of innovation, offering a wide variety of resources for countries in this field such as, innovation outlooks, technology briefs, methodology on renewable energy technology policy (RETIP), data base on International Standards and Patent in Renewable Energy (INSPIRE), renewable energy innovation landscape, studies on the potential of renewable energy for the decarbonisation of the energy sector, among others.

The III Energy Week organised by the Latin America Energy Organisation (OLADE) took place in Montevideo, Uruguay from 10-14 December. IRENA in cooperation with OLADE and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), organised a session on Technology Innovation to enhance the use of Renewable Energy. The session aimed to present the different experiences of selected Latin American countries that are progressing in the promotion of renewable energies, by highlighting their innovative strategies for building a sustainable energy future. IRENA also presented the main outcomes from the IRENA’s Innovation Week 2018, where representatives and entrepreneurs from Latin America spoke about the latest advances and new ideas to promote the transition to renewable energies.
