IRENA Regional Model Analysis & Planning Support Programme: Eastern Africa – Workshop 2

In partnership with the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP), IAEA, AUDA-NEPAD, World Bank, Get. Transform, IRENA is delivering a 18-month regional training on energy model analysis and planning to EAPP countries in 2024.

This event marked the second of six week-long regional training workshops under the programme. The training focused on strengthening participants' technical expertise by introducing the core concepts of the MESSAGE Reference Energy System (RES), the SPLAT-MESSAGE modelling tools, and essential software installations, including the SPLAT interface, solver, and the CMP model.

The workshop built upon the MESSAGE e-learning course delivered virtually from 17 to 24 March 2025 by the IAEA’s Planning and Economic Studies Section. This course provided a strong technical foundation in the MESSAGE modelling tool. Building on this foundation, the in-person training offered participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding through guided sessions and practical exercises. Participants gained hands-on experience in running a single-country model, reviewing results, and interpreting key outputs using SPLAT-MESSAGE for national energy planning.

Following the training, and with continued support from IRENA, participants will further develop their country models, consolidate their modelling and analytical work, and review and update national reference scenarios.
