IRENA Regional Model Analysis & Planning Support Programme: Eastern Africa - Workshop 1
In partnership with the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP), IAEA, AUDA-NEPAD, World Bank, Get. Transform, IRENA is delivering a 18-month regional training on energy model analysis and planning to EAPP countries in 2024.
This is the first training of six sessions under the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP). It is offered in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) focused on developing energy demand projections using the Model for Analysis of Energy Demand (MAED) tool. The MAED a simulation model developed by the IAEA to evaluate future energy demand based on medium- to long-term scenarios of socioeconomic, technological, and demographic developments. Prior to this training, the IAEA Planning and Economic Studies Section provided technical expertise in the use of MAED through an e-learning course for all participants.
The programme aims to build and enhance capacity for long-term energy planning in thirteen EAPP member countries that were able to participate: Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Around 50 experts from ministries, electric utilities, and specialised energy planning agencies across these countries took part in the training.
Through this training, participants received hands-on training in data collection, demand forecasting methodologies, and scenario analysis to enhance their capacity to integrate demand projections into national and regional energy masterplans.
