The Global Atlas for Renewable Energy is an initiative developed in 2012 by IRENA in partnership with the Clean Energy Ministerial Multilateral Solar and Wind Working Group to advance the deployment of renewables.
The initiative assists policymakers, project developers, investors and the global community by providing:
- a single online repository that assembles and collates renewable energy resource datasets and supplementary information for understanding the theoretical renewable potential in any region or country;
- online tools, such as the Bioenergy and SolarCity simulators, that estimate the technical potential of a specific renewable resource for planning and project development; and
- country-level technical analyses, such as the zoning and site assessments, to assess the technical and economic potentials for identifying opportunities for renewable energy project deployment.

The Global Atlas for Renewable Energy initiative helps countries realise their potential for renewable energy development. Since its inception in 2012, the initiative has assisted policy makers, project developers, investors and the global community by providing data – the Global Atlas for Renewable Energy, online tools – Bioenergy and SolarCity simulators, and country-level technical assistance – pre-feasibility and zoning analyses, to map investment opportunities for developing renewable projects, reduce the risks of investment in renewable energy projects, and increase access to capital and spur renewable energy investments.
