Investment Forums in Southeast Asia

Overview

Energy consumption is expected to double in Southeast Asia, and meeting demands through fossil fuels comes at the expense of energy security and sustainable development. Yet, Southeast Asia emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing economic regions, a global hub for international trade, manufacturing, and financial services.

Regional targets expect that USD 290 billion of total investment in renewable energy capacity will be needed in the region to reach the target of securing 23% of primary energy from renewable sources by 2025. To achieve wider socio-economic and environmental benefits, investments in renewables are vital to foster sustainable development.

The Southeast Asia Investment Forum aims to scale up renewable energy investments in the region, support project development and implementation, and contribute to the creation of policy and regulatory frameworks conducive to renewable energy investments.

The regional forum is part of IRENA’s contribution to the Climate Investment Platform (CIP), which aims to advance sustainable energy projects to investment maturity and facilitate their access to finance.

Key forum activities include matchmaking between projects, project developers, and potential financiers and investors. Renewable energy projects, along with renewable-based electricity grid and energy efficiency projects, may be considered for support.
