Investment Forums in South America

Overview

South America is leading the global energy movement with hydropower as a major contributor to electricity generation of the region. Yet, regional governments must take advantage of the declining costs of solar and wind technologies for further deployment of renewable energy projects.

Rich in natural resources, the region has enormous potential for further deployment of renewable energy projects. Innovative finance mechanisms and reforms to legal frameworks are driving renewable energy investments and development throughout South American, and governments have set targets to diversify their electricity mix to assure a steady transition to a sustainable future.

The South America Investment Forum aims to scale up renewable energy investments in the region, support project development and implementation, and contribute to the creation of policy and regulatory frameworks conducive to renewable energy investments.

The regional forum is part of IRENA’s contribution to the Climate Investment Platform (CIP), which aims to advance sustainable energy projects to investment maturity and facilitate their access to finance.

Key forum activities include matchmaking between projects, project developers, and potential financiers and investors. Renewable energy projects, along with renewable-based electricity grid and energy efficiency projects, may be considered for support.
