Newsletter

IRENA held a side event on 4 December, in cooperation with the South African Department of Energy, at the Ushaka Aqurium in Durban, and launched a new Working Paper in Durban entitled ‘Prospects for the African Power Sector. ’

Panelists included the Director-General of IRENA, Adnan Amin; Louis Seck, Minister of Renewable Energy, Senegal; Youba Sokona, Coordinator, African Climate Policy Centre; Francis Yamba, Director, Centre for Energy, Environment & Engineering, Zambia; Mokgadi Mathekgana, Chief Director, Clean Energy, Department of Energy, South Africa and Dolf Gielen, Director, IRENA IITC.

The main goal of the working paper is to provide insights into the opportunities and costs of renewable energy development pathways. The scenarios are not intended to be forecasts of what will happen, but rather allow the complex interaction of markets, costs and other core drivers to be analysed in order to identify key trends, development opportunities and critical technologies or assumptions.
