Renewables Readiness Assessment: Kiribati

Kiribati has identified a need for clear medium-term targets for fuel import reduction, and to complement these by scaling up renewables in its energy mix. Small scale off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have been in use since the 1970s, but experience in large-scale grid-connected solar PV applications is limited, necessitating capacity building for Kiribati’s move towards energy independence. 

The Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA) report, which follows a country-led assessment process, provides facts and analysis to support the discussion on ways to move forward with the renewable energy agenda. IRENA is ready to provide support in the implementation of the actions identified in this report. 

A Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA) identifies the actions needed to overcome a country’s barriers to renewable energy deployment, with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) providing technical support and expertise to facilitate consultations among different national stakeholders. While the process helps to shape appropriate policy and regulatory choices, each country determines which renewable energy sources and technologies are relevant and consistent with national priorities.
