As the Solar Impulse plane takes off from Abu Dhabi this week on its record-breaking journey, IRENA stands proudly in support of the project as one of its partners. The mission of Solar Impulse is to achieve the first round-the-world flight, powered only by the rays of the sun.
IRENA Director-General Adnan Amin expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership:
“By collaborating with Solar Impulse, IRENA reaffirms the importance of innovation and technology in achieving a cleaner, more secure, less volatile, global energy system.”
He added that the project “is truly emblematic of the type of pioneering spirit and innovation we are currently witnessing in the field of renewable energy. Its success is a testament to the fact that governments and the private sector are realizing just how much can be achieved through renewable energy deployment.”
The creators of the project Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg seek to demonstrate the possibilities of current alternative energy sources and technologies. The Solar Impulse core team includes 30 engineers, 25 technicians and 22 mission controllers. Solar Impulse and IRENA are both committed to expanding awareness about renewable energy.
