IRENA Director-General Adnan Z. Amin participated in the first meeting of the newly formed Advisory Board of the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative in Washington, D.C. on 19 April. The group of private and public sector leaders is chaired by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, who launched the initiative, and is co-chaired by Jim Yong Kim, the President of the World Bank.

The Sustainable Energy for All initiative was launched by the UN Secretary-General in 2011. It aims to achieve three interlinked objectives by 2030: provide universal access to modern energy; double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix; and double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.

Advisory Board members will provide strategic guidance and serve as global ambassadors for the initiative, as well as conducting high-level advocacy for action on energy and mobilising stakeholders on behalf of Sustainable Energy for All. Prior to being invited to join the Advisory Board, Mr. Amin served as a member of the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All.

“IRENA welcomes the global prominence that SE4ALL gives the critical issue of energy and the role of renewables, as it is complementary to the core mandate of IRENA: accelerating the deployment of renewable energy globally,” said Mr. Amin. “As the Renewable Energy Hub for the Initiative, we are looking forward to actively contributing to this global effort.”

Also during his visit to the United States, the IRENA Director-General participated in a panel discussion on the Initiative hosted by the co-Chairs of the Group of Friends on Sustainable Energy for All in New York.
