IRENA Director-General moderates high-level panel at Rio+20

The Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Mr. Adnan Z. Amin, today acted as Facilitator at a High-level session on “Sustainable Energy is Powering People and Innovation” at the invitation of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr Ban Ki-moon.

The session was the fourth in a series convened today by the High-Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All, which was established by the UN Secretary-General. Speakers were: H.E. Mr. Baburam Bhattarai, Prime Minister of Nepal; H.E. Mr. Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; Mr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, Managing Director, World Bank Group; and Ms. Leena Srivastava, Executive Director, TERI.

The objective of the High-level Group, which brings together leaders from government, finance, business and civil society, is to advise on an effective strategy to achieve the goal of sustainable energy for all by 2030 through three interlinked global targets: universal access to modern energy services; doubling energy efficiency; and doubling the share of renewable energy in world energy supply.
