64 member states of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) met from October 12 – 13 in Abu Dhabi to discuss the Agency’s Work Programme and Budget for 2009 and 2010.

Delegates focused on discussing and prioritizing IRENA’s activities in 2010. “Members engaged in constructive debates and displayed strong commitment to IRENA’s future activities. I feel that there is a lot of common ground for the work of IRENA,” said Hélène Pelosse, Director-General of IRENA.

Karsten Sach, Chair of the meeting, underlined that “delegates expressed a strong willingness to bring renewables forward. They mandated IRENA to play an important role in this and assured the Agency of their support.”

During the meeting, delegates discussed the progress in establishing IRENA’s Secretariat, the budget and Work Programme for 2009 and 2010 as well as IRENA’s upcoming activities at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Copenhagen, Denmark this December. It was decided that IRENA will co-host a side-event on “Renewable Energy Scenarios and Potentials” at COP15.

“Over the last three months I have met with government representatives, scientists, the industry and members of civil society. I experienced a deep interest in the Agency’s work and received offers of collaboration and support from all sides. We are currently establishing the institutional structure of IRENA. I encourage everybody interested in working with IRENA to forward his or her application. My goal is to staff IRENA with 50% women,” underlined Pelosse.
