IRENA Regional Model Analysis & Planning Support Programme: Eastern Africa – Workshop 3

In partnership with the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP), IAEA, AUDA-NEPAD, World Bank, Get. Transform, IRENA is delivering a 18-month regional training on energy model analysis and planning to EAPP countries in 2024.

The programme aims to build and enhance technical capacity in ten EAPP countries, with participation from ministries responsible for energy, electric utilities, and specialised planning agencies. Approximately 50 national experts are taking part, working with IRENA’s System Planning Test (SPLAT) modelling framework adapted for Eastern Africa.

In this training session, participants worked to further develop their national models, extracting key assumptions and charting results to generate policy insights. They gained hands-on experience in managing and improving their models, confidently recording their activities in the cloud using GitHub. Additionally, participants were guided on post-training assignments, which involved completing the demand modelling section of their national reports and integrating updated insights and assumptions into the supply modelling sections.

Following the training, and with continued support from IRENA, participants will finalize their country models, consolidate their modelling and analytical work, and review and update national reference scenarios.
