4th SPLAT Africa training for the Continental Power System Master Plan (CMP)

International Renewable Energy Agency and International Atomic Energy Agency are organizing the fourth week-long training for a team of African modellers developing Africa Continental Power System Masterplan (CMP). The training will be hosted in Kigali, Rwanda on 13 – 17 March 2023. It will focus on finalizing the CMP scenarios and analysing scenario sensitivities. It is the last session of the four-training series that aims to equip CMP modelling team with necessary skills to design a robust CMP model and various continental scenarios.

On 3rd June 2021, African Union has launched the Africa Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) which will be supported by the CMP plan currently developed by the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD). IRENA and IAEA are supporting the CMP initiative as officially endorsed modelling partners (IRENA press release).

The CMP modelling team consists of experts from AUDA-NEPAD, African Union Commission, four African Power Pools (Eastern, West, Central and Southern) and country experts from North Africa. The IRENA and IAEA’s MESSAGE-SPLAT tool has been chosen to perform generation and inter country transmission capacity expansion optimization for the CMP plan.
