Regional Training on the Planning and the Operation of Grids with Higher Shares of VRE

In the framework of the implementation of the West Africa Clean Energy Corridor (WACEC), which was validated, adopted and endorsed by the countries of the West Africa region in 2016 – 2017, IRENA has launched a capacity building programme in the region in collaboration with relevant stakeholders of the ECOWAS power sector (ECREEE, WAPP, ERERA and GIZ).

As part of the implementation of the grid planning and operation component of the capacity building programme, a scoping study on operation and planning practices, available infrastructure, performance of the power systems, good practices as well as potential gaps and opportunities was conducted across the region. This training session gathered grid operators and utility engineers from 9 Francophone countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Togo) and trained them based on the gaps identified by the scoping study.
