High-Level Meeting on Renewable Energy in South East Europe

On 13 January 2017, one day before IRENA’s 7th Assembly, IRENA organised a high-level meeting which served as a platform for a discussions on the opportunities and challenges in expanding the share of renewable energy in the region’s energy mix. The convening of this meeting was part of IRENA’s growing engagement with countries in South East Europe and followed the joint IRENA/Energy Community workshop on cost-effective renewable energy in SEE in March 2016 and the South East Europe Regional Consultation Meeting in October 2016.

Building on the region-wide consultation process undertaken in 2016, over 30 distinguished guests from the governments of South East Europe as well as the key regional stakeholders provided guidance on the potential areas where IRENA could offer most added value to its Members in addressing the key obstacles hindering a swifter deployment of renewable energy. The meeting culminated with the adoption of the Abu Dhabi Communique on Accelerating the Uptake of Renewables in South East Europe, endorsed by the Heads of delegation in attendance. As agreed upon in the meeting, the priority areas of collaboration shall include, among others, renewable energy planning, strengthened enabling frameworks, socio-economic benefits of renewables, and renewable energy financing. In addition, the event featured the launch of the IRENA’s publication Cost-Competitive Renewable Power Generation: Potential across South East Europe.
