Regional Workshop - Unlocking Geothermal Investments in Central America: Strengthening Enabling Policy and Regulatory Frameworks

Since 2013, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has been actively supporting the Latin American region in its efforts towards wider deployment of geothermal energy. Under the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA) initiative, IRENA has started implementing a regional capacity building programme in Central America to support the development of capabilities of various stakeholders along the geothermal value chain. This workshop constitutes part of this programme to strengthen the institutional and human capacities of Central American countries in the areas of geothermal technology, policy, regulation, and finance. The workshop was co-organized by IRENA and LaGeo in coordination with GIZ.

During two days, 21-22 August 2017, representatives from the governments of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama as well as geothermal experts from the region and beyond exchanged views on the state of play and the key areas of support required to accelerate the deployment of geothermal energy in Central America.

The second day of the workshop included the presentation of best practices from around the world and a visit to the Ahuachapán Geothermal Field and Power Plant.
