Workshop - Renewables for Cities in Africa: A roadmap from 2012 to 2050

IRENA, in partnership with UN Habitat, organised a workshop “Renewables for Growing Cities in Africa: A roadmap from 2012 to 2050” on 2 September alongside the World Urban Forum in Naples, Italy.

This workshop is part of a series of global workshops that form the basis for IRENA’s Technology Roadmap for Renewables in Cities. The aim of the roadmap is to provide IRENA Member States with guidance regarding the opportunities and barriers with respect to the use and deployment of renewables in the cities globally. It is envisaged that these findings will facilitate decision making processes by the policy makers and other stakeholders.

The specific topic of this workshop was to discuss priority areas, both in terms of technologies and policies, for an accelerated deployment of renewables in growing cities in Africa, and to translate these insights into concrete action items, as relevant to different stakeholders. Given IRENA’s and UN-Habitat’s roles as global platform for renewables and cities respectively, a range of stakeholders directly involved in the different aspects of developing, planning, investing, and supporting the deployment of renewables in cities were invited to inform IRENA’s roadmap.
