The International Renewable Energy Agency is an inter-governmental organisation headquartered in Abu Dhabi, mandated to promote the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity. IRENA’s mission is to play a leading role in the ongoing transformation of the global energy systems as a centre of excellence for knowledge and innovation, a global voice of renewable energy, a network hub for all stakeholders and a source of advice and support for countries. At present, IRENA has 163 Members (162 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 21 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged.
IRENA Innovation and Technology Centre (IITC) is responsible for the provision of the means for an accelerated renewable energy technology uptake, considering national conditions of resource endowment, social and economic frameworks. In accordance with the IRENA Statute, activities in this field include analysis of renewable energy technology policies; dissemination of information and increased awareness; technologies and equipment overview and assessment of success-failure factors; improved pertinent knowledge and technology transfer, and joint RD&D and provision of information about the development and deployment of national and international technical standards in relation to renewable energy.
IRENA supports countries in operationalising international standards and quality control mechanisms in support of national targets and policies for the deployment of renewable energy technologies. The Agency undertakes analytical work on the best strategies for implementing standards and quality control for different types of renewable energy technologies. This is complemented by regional and national advice, via workshops, meeting, reports and interactive information web platforms. In addition, the Agency collects and use data on patents in renewable energy to monitor and analysis technology development trends through the interactive online tool INSPIRE.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance of the Senior Programme Officer, End-use Sectors & Bioenergy and the Senior Programme Officer-Renewable Energy Roadmaps, the Associate Programme Officer should fulfil the following duties and responsibilities:
Professionalism: Demonstrates knowledge and experience in several of the fields of: energy technologies, decarbonization strategies for end-use sectors (industry, transport, buildings), bioenergy, innovation support and progress and renewable energy roadmaps. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.
Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.
Education: Advanced University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in engineering, economics, energy or any relevant field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience: A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in renewable energy technologies, with a particular focus on some of: decarbonisation of end-use sectors, bioenergy, innovation and renewable energy roadmaps. Knowledge and experience in analysing strategies to foster technology development and deployment for renewable energy is an asset.
Language: Excellent command of written and spoken English is required. Fluency in other languages is desirable.
