    • The Role of Sustainable Bioenergy in Supporting Climate and Development Goals

To raise awareness on the significance and highlight the critical role of sustainable bioenergy in the global energy transitions, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has issued a joint statement that seeks to address the persistent debates about what role bioenergy should play in support of climate and development goals.

    • UK renewables/SSE: dump trumps (Subscription + Opinion)

Waste is a terrible thing to mind, recycling experts quip. SSE's sale of a stake in two UK waste-to-energy projects will have had its shareholders chuckling. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), bioenergy generation (including both waste to energy and biomass) has some of the lowest costs of all renewable sources.

    • Ten simple changes to help save the planet

In a new report published in September 2018, the world’s leading climate scientists made their starkest warning so far: our current actions are not enough for us to meet our target of 1.5C of warming. We need to do more. The latest report from IRENA found that several of the most commonly used renewables, like solar, geothermal, bioenergy, hydropower and onshore wind, will be on par with or cheaper than fossil fuels by 2020.

    • Renewable Energy Jobs Top Record 10 Million Led by Solar: Chart

The solar photovoltaic sector was the largest employer in the renewable energy industry last year, accounting for 3.4 million jobs, up from 3.1 million in 2016, according to IRENA data. Bioenergy was the second biggest employer at about 3.1 million jobs, more than double the size of hydropower, which came in third at 1.5 million.

    • There's A Workable Plan for Lowering Global Emissions by 40% in 20 Years

IRENA estimated in 2013 that, in all regions of the world, average costs of generating electricity with most clean renewable-energy sources wind, hydro, geothermal, and low-emissions bioenergy are now at rough parity with fossil fuels. This is without even factoring in the environmental costs of burning oil, coal, and natural gas, the cost of which would of course rise through a carbon tax or cap.

Solar, wind, hydro, nuclear and bioenergy produced more electricity than coal in 2021 with Europe leading the way. Separately, a report from the International Renewable Energy Agency estimated that $5.7tn in annual investment was needed every year until 2030 for solar, wind and other forms of clean power to ensure that global warming does not exceed “dangerous thresholds”.

    • What does the green transition mean for energy jobs?

The number of people working in renewable energy hit 12.7 million last year - a 5.8% increase on 2020 - including jobs in solar, bioenergy, hydropower and wind energy, according to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
