Renewables Readiness Assessment: Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a self-sufficient, net exporter of electricity. However, its energy sector relies mostly on fossil fuels, in addition to hydro and a negligible level of renewables. Bosnia and Herzegovina is well endowed with renewable energy resource potential; however, the sector is still in its initial stage of development. While biomass is the most abundant renewable energy resource, there is also significant potential for solar PV and wind power.

This Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA), developed by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations (MoFTER), aims to support Bosnia and Herzegovina on its path towards integrating a higher share of renewable energy, and diversifying its national energy mix to align with its energy and climate ambitions.

The upcoming National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) provides an opportunity to set a clear path for the reduction of carbon emissions in the energy sector up to 2030. With the adoption of the NECP, Bosnia and Herzegovina should seek to improve the country’s long-term resilience, advance its economic diversification and competitiveness, and to secure its energy supply and sovereignty by harvesting its natural renewable resources.
