Renewable Energy Prospects for Ukraine

The country has significant potential. Specifically, Ukraine could increase its renewable energy use by tenfold, from 87 petajoules (PJ) in 2009 to 870 PJ through the accelerated deployment envisaged in REmap 2030, IRENA’s roadmap for scaling up renewables.

Increasing the renewable energy share from 13.2% based on current plans and policies (also known as the Reference Case) to 21.8% under REmap 2030 would result in savings of USD 175 million per year in 2030, the analysis finds. When accounting for the benefits of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission savings and reduce harm to health form pollution, these savings would reach at least USD 1.3 billion per year, and possibly as much as USD 5.5 billion in 2030.
