A Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA) identifies the actions needed to overcome a country’s barriers to renewable energy deployment, with IRENA providing technical support and expertise to facilitate consultations among different national stakeholders.

Niger’s RRA highlighted the need for a dedicated Renewable Energy Law, in order to establish the legal, economic and institutional basis for promoting renewable energy sources and technologies. Solar energy could be harnessed extensively in Niger, but a suitable investment model for this needs to be established. The national utility operates around 70 diesel-powered mini-grids throughout the country, and Niger should consider the possibility of hybridising these mini-grids with solar photovoltaic installations, which could be put in place through private-sector participation based on an appropriate public-private partnership model.

While the RRA process helps to shape appropriate policy and regulatory choices, each country determines which renewable energy sources and technologies are relevant and consistent with national priorities.
