The rapid development of renewable energy technologies in recent years puts a vital goal within our grasp. The sustainable energy system of the future could meets the pressing need for decarbonisation, thus contributing to the achievement of globally agreed socio-economic development goals and laying the foundations for a decent future for coming generations. This report provides a realistic roadmap toward these goals. In so doing, it looks beyond employment and global domestic product (GDP) to provide a composite welfare indicator based on a model that integrates energy, the economy, and the environment. Its results can inform energy system planning, economic policy making, and policies undertaken to ensure a just and inclusive energy transition at the global, regional and national level.
