IRENA Director-General Adnan Z. Amin (left) and UNECE Executive Secretary Christian Friis Bach signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 23 September to promote the exchange of know-how and best practices to accelerate renewable energy deployment.

On the side lines of Climate Summit 2014 in New York, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) agreed to formalise their cooperation with a view to increasing the share of renewables in the global energy mix.

“This cooperation agreement will provide an effective platform for engaging UNECE's member States in IRENA’s broad knowledge framework, designed to advance the deployment of renewable energy worldwide and build a sustainable energy future,” said IRENA Director-General Adnan Z. Amin.

The two organisations will promote the exchange of know-how and best practices among relevant experts, in order to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy as an affordable and scalable means to achieve sustainable development and climate change mitigation. This cooperation will include the exchange of information on tools and mechanisms for renewable energy investments and capacity building, as well as support for policy and regulatory reform.
