An official delegation from Peru led by the Minister of Energy and Mines H.E. Jorge Merino Tafur (right) met with International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Director-General Adnan Z. Amin (left) on Thursday in Abu Dhabi to discuss a range of issues from expanding energy access to renewable energy potential in Peru. The meeting touched on several important areas of collaboration between the South American country with vast renewable energy potential and the Abu Dhabi-based IRENA, the world’s only intergovernmental organisation devoted to the advancement of renewable energy. “With Peru’s energy demand growing at eight percent annually, we need to develop our renewable energy resources to meet the needs of our growing economy,” said Minister Merino Tafur . “IRENA’s ability to provide renewable energy assessments, mapping and other capacity-building tools will help us achieve that goal,” he added.
Peru, which is slated to become a full member of IRENA on November 21, will join 119 other members in the growing list of countries to become a party to the global organisation. “We welcome the forthcoming membership of Peru in IRENA and look forward to working with them closely to increase the adoption of renewable energy in South America and around the world,” said Director-General Amin.
IRENA will hold its 4th General Assembly in Abu Dhabi on January 18 and 19, kicking off the annual Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
