Much has been achieved, much remains to be done

Efforts at the multilateral level to create awareness about the need and the benefits to turn to renewable energies for sustainable development had gone a long way, and much had already been undertaken by countries in that direction, said Mr Adnan Z. Amin, Director General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) at a side event, jointly organized with Germany and Morocco, and in the presence of H.E. Mr Peter Altmaier, Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of Germany, and H.E. Mr Fouad Douiri, Minister for Energy, Mines, Water and Environment of the Kingdom of Morocco.

However, much remained to be done to provide energy access to those most in need. He pointed out that renewable power generation systems are now the most economic solution for off-grid electrification, for mini-grids and many grid extension projects in developing countries.

Mr Amin also stressed the need for international and cross-border cooperation for harnessing renewable energy potentials for growth in the developing world.

The theme of the side-event was “Transforming the global energy system by deploying renewable energies – How to make it happen?”
