Pelosse: “It is imperative that a minimum of 25 IRENA member states ratify the statute by mid 2010”

Abu Dhabi – UAE, August 31, 2009: A total of five member states have ratified the statute of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the newly established intergovernmental international agency fully dedicated to the universal development and dissemination of renewable energy technologies. IRENA’s host country, the United Arab Emirates was the first to ratify and deposit the statute in Germany on June 18, 2009.

Director General of IRENA, Ms. Helene Pelosse said “Although it is a great achievement to have 5 countries so far ratify; we are still at the beginning of the road. It is imperative that a minimum of 25 IRENA member states ratify the statute by mid 2010. This is what is required for the statute to go into force, and what is integral to the success of IRENA.” she added.

Countries in order of ratification date are: UAE, the Republic of Kenya, Liechtenstein, Maldives and Sweden.

Following the respective procedures for each member state, the Statute will enter into force 30 days after 25 ratifications have been deposited with the Depositary in Germany. Meanwhile, countries who wish to be founding members of IRENA can still sign the statute by contacting the German Foreign Affairs office in Berlin.

At present the Statute remains open for signatures and all states and regional intergovernmental economic integration organizations. After the Statute has entered into force, states and regional intergovernmental economic integration organisations will need to apply for membership.
