IRENA at COP30
The 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) takes place in Belém, Brazil, bringing together 200+ countries, companies, civil society organisations, NGOs, academia, youth and other stakeholders to advance climate action. The Brazilian COP30 Presidency has identified as key priorities the alignment of commitments between developed and developing countries on climate finance, the establishment of emission reduction targets consistent with climate science, and the consideration of the socio-economic impacts of climate change on vulnerable populations.
In early 2024, IRENA was designated as the custodian agency for tracking progress on the tripling renewable power capacity by 2030 goal outlined in the UAE Consensus. The second edition of the Delivering on the UAE Consensus: Tracking progress toward tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030 was released in partnership with the COP30 Brazilian Presidency, and the Global Renewables Alliance (GRA) during a pre-COP30 high-level event in Brasília.
According to the report, global renewable capacity additions totalled 582 GW in 2024, marking the highest annual increase on record. Despite this progress, capacity growth still falls of the trajectory required to achieve the COP28 UAE Consensus target of tripling renewables to 11.2 TW by 2030. To reach this goal, renewable capacity must now expand by 16.6 percent annually from 2025 onward, requiring average annual additions of around 1,122 GW through the end of the decade.
At COP30, IRENA remains steadfast in supporting countries on their energy transition pathways, emphasising that achieving the tripling goal and limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires overcoming structural barriers through modernised infrastructure, supportive policies, enhanced institutional capacity, scaled-up financing, and robust international cooperation.
