Capacity development workshop: IRENA SolarCity Simulator – Democratic Republic of Congo

On April 29, 2025, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) will organise a virtual capacity development workshop to launch and present the newly developed the SolarCity Simulator for the Democratic Republic of Congo – Kinshasa, Kananga and Mbandaka.

The SolarCity simulator is a free online tool developed by IRENA, with the support of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of the Government of Japan, to accelerate the deployment of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in the selected areas and achieve carbon neutral goals. It helps households, businesses and municipal authorities evaluate their prospects for generating electricity and determine potential economic savings and social-environmental benefits.

For households and corporates, the simulator provides a means to calculate rooftop solar PV potential, energy production, annual revenue, payback period, and social-environmental benefits.

For municipal authorities, the simulator provides a means to test system designs, policy instruments, and incentive schemes, which facilitate NDC targets setting and rooftop solar programme planning.

This event will bring together approximately 50 participants from high-level representatives from Government Ministries, power utilities, development partners, financial institutions, private sector, civil society, and stakeholders involved in SolarCity simulator development.

The event will feature the methodology used to develop the simulator and demonstrated how the tool could be utilised by homeowners, investors, and project developers to assess the rooftop solar PV potential in Georgetown.
