Renewable Energy Outlook for the European Union – Country Engagement Workshop
IRENA is currently developing a Regional Energy Transition Outlook (RETO) for the European Union (EU) as a follow up to the study “Renewable Energy Prospects for the European Union” from 2018. The present study assesses cost-effective pathways for the EU to achieve the Paris Agreement goal of limiting the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and comply with the current European regulatory framework on energy and climate, while considering the regional and global geopolitics of the energy transition. Reaching these goals requires accelerated deployment of renewables across all energy end-use and supply sectors.
The EU RETO explores the role of end-use sector electrification, direct uses of renewables, (including bioenergy and green hydrogen), energy efficiency solutions, expansion of renewable generation, grid expansion, sector coupling solutions, and battery storage-systems among others. The importance of expanding inter-national and regional power sector integration is also considered in the analysis.
As part of the project, IRENA, with the support of the European Commission, is organising a two-day consultation workshop with experts from the EU Member States, which will take place online on the 16th and 17th of October 2024. During this event, IRENA will present and consult with the EU Member States on the preliminary results from the analysis of the end-use sectors (transport, industry and buildings), and the power sector. Participation in the workshop is via invitation only and will not be open to the general public.
