East Africa Renewable Energy Statistics Training Workshop
The absence of timely, accurate and accessible energy data in East Africa has been identified as one of the challenges for data-driven policy formulation; effective energy planning; monitoring progress of NDCs and SDG energy targets and; ultimately, for the deployment of renewable energy in the region. The off-grid sector in particular, often go unrecorded in national statistics despite the rapid deployment of off-grid renewable energy solution The lack of harmonization of data methodologies and energy taxonomy further hinders the comparability of energy statistics across countries.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), in cooperation with the East Africa Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE) will provide a three-day training in Kampala, Uganda from 1-3 October in renewable energy statistics with a focus on off grid renewable energy to address these challenges and improve the availability of reliable information on renewable energy in the East Africa region.
The workshop aims to help countries collect, validate, and analyse renewable energy statistics, following international best practices and the internationally agreed definitions and methodologies used for energy statistics. It is targeted at national statisticians and government officials responsible for the collection of renewable energy data.
The training event will include a combination of technical presentations, practical exercises and group discussions on key topics such as promoting data transparency and dissemination; construction of energy balances; developing Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems for tracking NDCs; methodologies for on-grid/off-gid renewable energy data collection; data validation, estimation and dissemination; best practices for energy survey design. In addition, participants will be required to share their experience of renewable energy data collection in their respective countries identifying challenges and good practices. IRENA will be responsible for training delivery and all costs associated with the workshop. We are also engaging EACREEE to support regional coordination for the training workshop.
