Third Japan Africa Public-Private Economic Forum

In the context of the Third Japan Africa Public-Private Economic Forum, to be held on 16th and 17th of December 2024 in Abidjan, Côte D’Ivoire, this webinar is co-organized by IRENA and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

In most developed regions of the world, the energy transition is perceived as a technical shift from fossil fuel-based energy production to more innovative and sustainable technologies, to support the current extremely energy intensive economic structures. However, in Africa, the energy transition cannot be reduced to simply safeguarding the current economic system, as there is an urgent need for an increase in energy production and infrastructures to trigger social and economic take-off.

The energy transition in Africa is mostly a question of sustainable energy development. Despite its abundant renewable resources, only 59.2 % of its population has access to electricity. The continent has received less than 2% of global investments in renewable energy between 2000 and 2020. There are huge opportunities for investments in Africa that can support the continent's socio-economic and energy transformation challenges.

This webinar builds on IRENA's work by outlining key challenges and opportunities in the energy sector in Africa. It will discuss how international partners and investors can play a crucial role in addressing current challenges by scaling up investments in infrastructure and technology, enhancing access to finance, and expanding energy access across regions/countries.
