Renewables Talk for IRENA Permanent Representatives in commemoration of 15th anniversary of IRENA and 1st International Day of Clean Energy

The IRENA Secretariat, together with the Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates to IRENA and the Embassy of Panama to the United Arab Emirates, co-hosted the fifteenth edition of the Renewables Talk for IRENA Permanent Representatives in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the foundation of IRENA and the 1st International Day of Clean Energy. The event took place on Thursday 25 January 2024 at 18:00 GST at IRENA Headquarters, Abu Dhabi.

26 January 2024 marks a momentous occasion: the inaugural International Day of Clean Energy, coinciding with the 15th anniversary of the foundation of IRENA. The United Arab Emirates, the Host Country of IRENA, and Panama were the key sponsors of the United Nations Resolution A/77/L.93 which decided to proclaim the International Day of Clean Energy on 26 January, the day IRENA was founded.

Since its foundation in 2009, IRENA has emerged as a global leader in advancing the global commitment to reshaping the energy landscape, steadfastly supporting nations in their adoption and deployment of renewable energy. Across its 15-year journey, IRENA has been instrumental in spearheading efforts to advance renewable energy policies, technologies, and global, regional, and national knowledge-sharing endeavours. IRENA has championed renewable energy solutions as the cornerstone of a sustainable future, promoting energy security, economic prosperity, and environmental well-being for all.

Within this context and under the umbrella of the Renewables Talk for IRENA Permanent Representatives, the 15th edition of Renewables Talk was organized on the night before, which served to be an event of inspiration, collaboration and action, as the global community begins to assess the outcomes of COP28 and its urgent call to triple the renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The event brought together high-level participants from IRENA Members and partners to celebrate the International Day of Clean Energy and the 15-year of progress with the IRENA Family. It also offered a significant occasion to sustain the impetus, reaffirm commitments and envision a sustainable future.
