8th Meeting of the Collaborative Framework on Hydro Power

Hydropower is the largest source of renewable energy worldwide, and its development is considered essential for advancing in the energy transition. The Collaborative Framework on Hydropower was established in 2020 as a response to an explicit request from IRENA Members to expand the Agency’s work on Hydropower.

This framework seeks to advance priority areas, coordinate concrete actions and foster international collaboration on the topic of hydropower. As of August 2024, seven meetings of the Collaborative Framework on Hydropower have taken place, along with a high-level meeting, having gathered close to 100 countries and relevant international players such as industry associations and banks in its different meetings.

For the biennium 2024-2025, following the publication of the report “The changing role of hydropower: Challenges and opportunities”, which outlined the opportunities and challenges identified during the first three years of the Collaborative Framework, members agreed to focus on three thematic areas:

  • Sustainable and resilient hydropower development
  • Financial viability and investment attraction
  • Technological and Operational Optimization in Hydropower

The eight meeting of the Collaborative Framework, scheduled for 14 August 2024, aimed to provide participants with insights on the importance of sustainable hydropower projects in the energy transition. It showcased tools and success stories that integrate sustainability into different types of hydropower projects and explored ways to enhance or maintain hydropower's contribution to the energy system, in terms of adequacy and flexibility, while minimizing environmental impacts.

The event was by invitation only.
