Kenya APRA Consultation Workshop

The National Consultation Workshop on Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA), organized by the Ministry of Energy of Kenya (MoEP) in partnership with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) brought together a wide array of national and international stakeholders relevant for accelerating Kenya’s Energy Transition. Participants included government officials, energy regulator, utility, and planners, energy experts, civil society, non-governmental institutions, private sector, development partners, financial institutions, multilateral development banks, and academic institutions.

Energy pathways that prioritise a systemic shift towards renewable energy have much to offer the African continent, whose energy systems require fundamental change and significant investment in the coming decade to open socio-economic opportunities for its growing populations. At the workshop participants discussed Kenya’s national priorities across economic growth and industrial development, job creation, improving lives and livelihoods and other development ambitions for the preparation of the framework support to accelerate the energy transition.

Launched at the sidelines of the Africa Climate Summit by Kenya’s Presidents together with IRENA, Denmark, Germany and UAE, the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa (APRA) aims to scale, accelerate, and diversify renewable energy and foster the transformation of their energy systems toward 100% renewables. This effort driven by a cohort of African countries (Kenya, Ethiopia, Namibia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Zimbabwe) with high renewable energy ambition. The partnership recognises a key opportunity for African nations to tap into their abundant renewable energy and mineral potential to drive green industrialisation locally while reinforcing the energy transition worldwide. The partnership focuses on three key areas: mobilising finance, providing technical assistance and capacity building, and engaging the private sector.
