Long-Term Energy Scenarios (LTES) For Developing National Energy Transition Plans In Africa
Long-term energy scenarios have been used as effective tools for energy planning by various governments, including in the African continent. Countries in Africa have commonly used them in energy system master plans and integrated resource plans. Some countries have planning teams within the government, while others rely on external consultancy while building internal capacity. Some countries have institutionalized their planning practices, while others tend to have a more ad-hoc approach. Those countries are becoming increasingly aware that planning for the clean energy transition may demand a new level of complexity to the governance of the scenario planning process and, in some cases, to the underlying modelling methodologies.
Against this background, IRENA's LTES Network hosted a webinar series on “Long-term energy scenarios (LTES) for developing national energy transition plans in Africa”, in collaboration with the following regional implementation partners: The African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Union Commission, African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), GET.transform, the Ministry of Energy of Kenya and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
This events were held between the 29th of November 2021 and 13th of January 2022. The series featured speakers from 10 African countries and regional Power Pools that have well-established scenario-based planning practices, focusing on the governance structures around the development and the use of LTES to plan the energy transition, and institutional efforts to enhance them.
The event was feature live interpretation from English to French, and vice versa.
