Twenty-First Meeting of the IRENA Council
The IRENA Council is composed of 21 Members elected for a two-year term and is accountable to the Assembly. Council members serve on a rotating basis to ensure the effective participation of both developing and developed countries and a fair and equitable geographical distribution. The Council’s responsibilities include facilitating consultation and cooperation among IRENA Members and reviewing the Agency’s work programme, budget and annual report among other relevant administrative and institutional matters.
The twenty-first Council meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was held in a virtual setting from 24 to 26 May 2021 and Committee meetings on 18 and 19 May 2021.
IRENA’s eleventh Assembly elected the following countries to serve on the Council in 2021: Algeria, Benin, Colombia, Denmark, El Salvador, Germany, India, Japan, Kenya, Norway, Republic of Korea, Saint Lucia, Somalia, Switzerland, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of America, Vanuatu and Zimbabwe. Canada, China, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Italy, Nigeria, Tuvalu, Uruguay act as alternates.
Two committees currently assist the Council in its programmatic work: the Programme and Strategy Committee (PSC) where Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Islamic Republic of Iran, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sudan, Ukraine, and Zimbabwe serve as Members of PSC and Samoa as Chair of the Committee; and the Administration and Finance Committee where Chad, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ghana, Guyana, Japan, Saint Lucia, Switzerland serve as Members of the AFC while United States of America serves as Chair of the Committee.
