Renewable Energy Targets and Policy Frameworks in Albania

With a share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption of almost 35%, mainly from hydropower, Albania has made commitments towards developing other renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, biomass and geothermal, to decarbonise all end-use sectors. Albania is currently working on the development of its national Energy and Climate Plan which is pending submission to the Energy Community, and on the enhanced NDC to be submitted in 2021. In this context, IRENA is organising a workshop on Renewable energy targets and policy frameworks to support this process.

IRENA has an extensive body of work dedicated to policies and finance for renewable energy, including analyses of targets, socio-economic impacts and policies for heating and cooling. In addition, IRENA has analysed the context of Albania through dedicated studies. Most recently, a Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA) was conducted, that analysed the current status and barriers to renewable energy deployment. On the regional level, IRENA’s Renewable Energy Market Analysis: Southeast Europe identified emerging renewable energy trends and themes in the region at the intersection of public policy and market development, as well as the potential socio-economic benefits that a decarbonisation would bring to the region. The Renewable Energy Prospects for Central and South-Eastern Europe Energy Connectivity (CESEC) offered a full energy transition perspective to 2030, examining impacts on energy costs, investment plans, supply security and fossil-fuel consumption, along with, climate, the environment and people’s health.

IRENA’s workshop on Renewable energy targets and policy frameworks aims to provide capacity building to support the design of renewable energy targets and policy frameworks to help define and achieve the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in Albania. The workshop is a part of a series of activities undertaken by IRENA in the context of NDC support to Albania and is funded through the NDC Partnership’s Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP).

This is a closed meeting, by invitation only.
